On October 28th (Thursday), 2021, at 1.00 P.M., Meeting Room 2, Department of Environment (DOE), BMA City Hall 2 (Din Daeng), Mr. Wirat Manassanitwong, Director-General of Department of Environment (DOE) jointly displayed the presentation on Bangkok’s climate change implementation in “The 10th Asia Smart City Conference” arranged by City of Yokohama, Japan, through the online video conference with the aim of sharing operational knowledge and experiences about moving towards the Net Zero-Carbon City and enhancing City-to-City collaboration. In this regard, the representatives from organizations namely City of Yokohama, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Bank of Japan, Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO) jointly displayed the presentation in such conference about their own implementation on climate change, City-to-City cooperation, sharing on organizational work plans for future implementation, and discussion of private sector cooperation based on the awareness raising initiative on carbon emission reduction with global cities.
At present, global warming is a significant issue which is in an interest by each nation and it is one of major aspects for national development toward the low carbon economy and society, and also net zero-carbon city by 2050 in order to handle and mitigate global warming and climate change. Japan is a leader country and a good prototype in response to climate change. Especially City of Yokohama is a good role model in taking actions in response to climate change for many cities all over the world. Bangkok Metropolis has cooperated with JICA under the project for strengthening the institutional capacity for the implementation of Bangkok Master Plan on Climate Change 2013 – 2023. According to the 10th Asia Smart City Conference, BMA and City of Yokohama could take this opportunity to sustain and strengthen long relationships and also this chance was the good beginning to jointly cooperate with other cities for zero-carbon society.
For taking actions on climate change previously, BMA continuously cooperated with several different sectors both domestic and foreign nations. Apart from that, there was to arrange a symbolic activity.
For example, launching the campaign to turn off the unnecessary lights for an hour under the Earth Hour 60+ project with the aim of promoting the participation from many sectors such as governmental and private sectors for motivating awareness building an enabling environment to adjust people’s behaviors electric consumption and energy efficiency in a concrete manner. In a recent year, BMA has implemented the Earth Hour 60+ project to cover the activity for GHG mitigation to relevant sectors such as public transportation, waste reduction, and green area increase. At the same time, BMA would like to increase more networks to conduct the project together.
